MoviMED announces distribution agreement with Nerian Vision Technologies
MoviMED - Custom Imaging Solutions has entered into a distribution agreement with Nerian Vision Technologies out of Stuttgart, Germany.
Nerian provides real-time 3D depth sensing solutions, based on stereoscopic imaging. The addition of this product line further expands MoviMED's offering for 3D sensing and imaging solutions.
Stereoscopic imaging has traditionally been relatively slow, due to the demanding imaging processing tasks involved. This has always been a disadvantage for this technology when it comes to capturing accurate 3D information from a moving scene, typical for mobile robotics applications.
The Nerian SceneScan and SceneScan Pro image processing unit overcome this limitation by utilizing a real-time stereoscopic imaging technique. For this, Nerian is using a field programmable gate array chip (‘FPGA'), allowing a 3D image refresh rate of up to 100 frames/sec with a VGA 640 x 480-pixel resolution and 24 frame per second with an HD resolution of 1,280 x 960 pixel. This helps eliminate 3D motion artifacts and makes this stereo vision camera system an excellent choice for mobile robotic applications.
The ScenScan unit is a lower cost alternative for less demanding applications, whereas the ScenScan Pro supports a total resolution of up to 6.2 Mpixels in monochrome and 2.0 Mpixels for color cameras.
As for the camera choices, Nerian offers their own stereo camera setup called "Karmin3". The Karmin3 was specifically designed for integration with the SceneScan controllers. The Karmin3 comes with two different baseline distances - 10cm and 25cm. The 10cm version is ideal for close range depth measurements, with distances as low as 0.5m. The 25cm version is intended for long range stereo vision applications. The greater baseline width provides a better depth resolution for longer working distances.
However, customers may also choose their own machine vision cameras with a USB2 or USB3 interface. The communications interface to the SceneScan controller is realized via a GigE interface. Detailed documentation and a comprehensive and easy to integrate software development kit (‘SDK') make sure to help reduce the integration time needed.
All in all, the Nerian stereo camera offerings open up a wide field of 3D imaging applications. These include 3D robotic vision for localizing and identifying parts for pick and place applications, measurement of very large objects, such as vehicles and containers, autonomous vehicle guidance, warehousing, occupational safety and many others.
Nerian also offers an FPGA IP Core license for larger volume OEM customers, that would like to design their own solution.

Featured Product

3D Vision: Ensenso B now also available as a mono version!
This compact 3D camera series combines a very short working distance, a large field of view and a high depth of field - perfect for bin picking applications. With its ability to capture multiple objects over a large area, it can help robots empty containers more efficiently. Now available from IDS Imaging Development Systems. In the color version of the Ensenso B, the stereo system is equipped with two RGB image sensors. This saves additional sensors and reduces installation space and hardware costs. Now, you can also choose your model to be equipped with two 5 MP mono sensors, achieving impressively high spatial precision. With enhanced sharpness and accuracy, you can tackle applications where absolute precision is essential. The great strength of the Ensenso B lies in the very precise detection of objects at close range. It offers a wide field of view and an impressively high depth of field. This means that the area in which an object is in focus is unusually large. At a distance of 30 centimetres between the camera and the object, the Z-accuracy is approx. 0.1 millimetres. The maximum working distance is 2 meters. This 3D camera series complies with protection class IP65/67 and is ideal for use in industrial environments.
