New Application in Wind and Solar Energy Storage from ICP DAS USA

Wind and solar energy are essential to a sustainable future, but they suffer from peaks and valleys in electricity output that make it difficult to maintain 24/7 power. ICP DAS USA has proposed an efficient battery management and monitoring system for renewable electricity storage facilities.

New developments in clean, renewable energy show us the path to a sustainable future and ICP DAS USA is committed to developing applications that will lead the way. For this application, ICP DAS USA proposes an energy storage monitoring and management system consisting of two main platforms and their respective subsystems: the battery cabinet management platform and battery information concentrator. The energy storage system is designed to take advantage of excess energy generated during peak production times, as part of a large energy storage plant, effectively managing the peaks and valleys of wind and solar energy production.

Two ICP DAS USA PACs are specified for each part of the system— the battery information concentrator uses VP-25W1 and the battery cabinet management platform uses XP-8341, and both work with the battery management units (BMUs) at the facility.

Each group of systems includes a battery cabinet management platform, under which a maximum of 12 battery information concentrators can be connected. Each battery information concentrator can be connected to a maximum of 18 BMUs. (System Architecture is illustrated in fig. 1)

Each BMU acquires vital data from the battery packs, such as: battery power, temperature, SOC & SOH, charging current, and charging voltage. The battery information concentrator then acquires the data from its connected BMUs through CAN Bus interfaces.

After collecting the information from each BMU, the battery information concentrators upload the collected data to the XP-8341 that controls its battery management platform. CAN Bus interfaces are provided to both the battery information concentrator and the battery cabinet management platform through different I-8120W I/O expansion modules.

The battery information concentrator collects data from each BMU, constantly detects the current and voltage signals from the insulation detectors in the battery cabinet —through I-7012F and I-87017W modules— and reports all data back to the battery cabinet management platform at user-scheduled intervals.

The battery cabinet management platform not only manages the status of the battery pack in each battery cabinet, but also sends the relevant information to the transmitter through the RS-232 and RS-485 interfaces. In addition, the battery cabinet management platform regularly polls the insulation detectors to determine whether any alarms have been initiated, and performs on and off control for the battery relays.

To instantly see the status of each battery cabinet at the site, all the relevant information from each battery cabinet is accessible either through the screen display on the battery cabinet management platform, or through the screen for the battery information concentrator built in to the VP-25W1 and embedded in the door of each battery cabinet.
